Our History

For more than 75 years, the Fairhill Campus has been an important part of the Greater Cleveland community. Its story reaches back even further, beginning in 1837, when Cleveland was chosen as the site for a hospital to care for sick sailors, boat workers, and travelers along the waterways.

Early Beginnings

The original hospital opened with just 85 beds. As Cleveland grew, the building could no longer meet the community’s needs. By 1916, it was clear that a new location was necessary. Congress approved the move, and plans began for a larger hospital at the Fairhill site.

On June 28, 1930, the United States Marine Hospital opened at Fairhill. It served patients with a dedicated team of 15 doctors, 42 nurses, and 72 attendants. Over time, the hospital’s role changed, and in 1953, Congress voted to close it. The hospital officially closed on June 30, 1953.

A New Purpose

In 1956, the building was given new life as Fairhill Psychiatric Hospital. A major renovation in 1973 added a two-story front addition, expanding the space and its services. After many years of care and service, the psychiatric hospital closed in December 1983. The campus then sat unused for several years.

What Drives Us

Becoming the Fairhill Collaborative Campus

In 1987, community leaders began the work of transforming the site into the collaborative campus it is today. Long before the hospital buildings stood, the land was cleared by Otto I. Leisy, president of Cleveland’s Leisy Brewing Company. In 1905, he built a large three-story brick mansion and a two-story stable on the property.

Those historic stables still stand and are actively used today. They are available for meetings, workshops, celebrations, and community events.

Today, the Fairhill Campus honors its past while looking toward the future. It remains a place where history, community, and opportunity come together.
